NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Multi-channel network Collective Digital Studio snagged Maria Menounos and Keven Undergaro‘s YouTube channel and online broadcast network Black Hollywood Live for its line-up. The deal marks the second partnership between CDS and BHL founders Menounos and Undergaro; their other online network, AfterBuzz TV, joined the MCN in 2014. BHL records more than 150,000 downloads per week and features more than 15 shows and specials.
 
BBC 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne and former Cosmopolitan and Red magazine editor Sam Baker announced a new online platform specifically geared toward women called The Pool. The site will feature audio, video and writing from a group of journalists and writers, including broadcaster and journalist Sasha Wilkins, MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers, Guardian beauty columnist Sali Hughes, Times and Evening Standard writer Laura Craik and comedian and writer Viv Groskop. The Guardian reports that The Pool will initially have 20 pieces of content a day. Fourteen17 is an early investor in the platform.
 
Free movie and TV streaming service Popcornflix added five morning shows through a new partnership with O2 Media. The content marks the service’s first leap into the lifestyle genre. “We’re especially happy about the launch because these shows are really great premium content from O2 media, and also air on Lifetime,” Popcornflix.com Executive Vice President David Fannon told Cynopsis. “The Balancing Act has been on TV for seven years now; Access Health just premiered a couple of months ago and will be available on demand and for free on Popcornflix soon.”
 
NBC Entertainment
and Google teamed up to create a web companion for the new drama American Odyssey with “Explore American Odyssey,” powered by Google Maps. The site focuses on cities and destinations from the show and allows fans to uncover exclusive character content, documents and photos. The series, from writer-director Peter Horton (Grey’s Anatomy) and writers Adam Armus and Kay Foster (The Following), premieres on April 5 at 10p ET on NBC.
 
Comcast’s third annual Xfinity Watchathon Week, during which customers can check out series for free on Xfinity On Demand, will kick off April 6. Last year, Xfinity TV’ers took big advantage of the event, spending 50 million hours catching up on shows. Viewers are encouraged to visit the new Watchathon Headquarters site to plan their week; they can also chat on Facebook and Twitter by using #Watchathon hashtag.

ADVERTISING + AD PLATFORMS
 

At the IAB Mobile Marketplace conference yesterday, the International Advertising Bureau released the Video Addendum to MRAID. The addendum standardizes support for video within MRAID (Mobile Rich Ad interface Definition) ads, while expanding VPAID, or the Video Player Ad interface Definition. “Simply figuring out how to start playing an ad in this hybrid scenario­how the ad should signal that it needs both MRAID and VPAID support, and how the container should respond­took significant time and effort,” IAB Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence Senior Director Joe Laszlo wrote in a blog post. “We’ve devised a good and practical solution, while keeping implementation as simple as possible for the vendor community.” Check out the new guidelines here.

The interactive streaming news network from CBS, CBSN, is now featured in the CBS News app for Android. Available to download on Google Play, CBS News is produced for digital platforms with full-day live, anchored coverage every weekday and on Sunday nights.
 
BET Networks
launched the live broadcast capability on its TV Everywhere app BET Now. Fans who authenticate their pay-TV provider on the app itself can watch live programming via their iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices; the app is currently available for free download in iTunes or Google Play.

EXEC MOVES

Netflix added Anne Sweeney and Brad Smith to its Board. Sweeney was most recently Co-Chair Disney Media Networks and President of Disney-ABC Television at the Walt Disney Company. Smith was formerly Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Legal and Corporate Affairs at Microsoft. The appointments take the total of Netflix directors to nine, which include: Richard Barton (Zillow Co-Founder), A. George (Skip) Battle (Chairman of the Board of Fair Isaac Corporation), Timothy Haley (Co-Founder of Redpoint Ventures), Reed Hastings (Netflix CEO), Jay Hoag (General Partner, Technology Crossover Ventures), Leslie Kilgore (Netflix CMO) and Ann Mather (Netflix board member since 2010).

Meredith Corp. appointed Kim Martin as Chief Strategy Officer. She will work on Meredith’s millennial strategy for multiple media platforms. Previously, Martin was President and General Manager of WE tv.
