Cross Samantha Bee off the list of frontrunners for the Daily Show anchor seat. The correspondent for Comedy Central’s late nighter has been signed by TBS to host her own show, currently in early development. TBS gave an order last month for a comedy created by Bee and her husband, Jason Jones, also soon to leave The Daily Show to star in the series. “We actually have their kids coming in next week to pitch us animation,” joked Brett Weitz, EVP of original programming. Bee will do “occasional pieces” for The Daily Show until production begins on her new show, said TBS.

IN THE NEWS

Controversy can’t keep Bill O’Reilly down: Fox NewsThe O’Reilly Factor has seen a ratings boost since its host came out swinging against accusations of exaggerated reporting. Tuesday’s show posted the biggest audience of 2015, with 3.38 million total viewers and 590,000 among A25-54, up 25 percent and 41 percent year-to-year.

No hard feelings: In a follow-up to the Monday night finale of HGTV’s Ellen’s Design Challenge, which featured a “shocking twist” that was actually pretty shocking, disqualified winner Tim McClellan appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday to say it’s all good. McClellan was booted after producers found that a table like the one he’d designed for the competition already existed, but although he insisted he’d never seen the piece of furniture before, McClellan acknowledged the similarities between the tables. “I understand the decision made and I accept it,” McClellan told the talk show host. DeGeneres, an interior design aficionado whose A Very Good Production was behind the HGTV hit, told her guest, “I think you’re talented and I want to do something with you.”

Tracey Ullman is returning to the UK for a BBC One comedy series. Six-part The Tracey Ullman Show (same name as her 1987-1990 Fox series, different show) will have Ullman playing a variety of characters. Said Shane Allen, controller of comedy commissioning at the BBC, “It’s about time the Americans gave her back.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox is developing The Expendables as a possible event series, reports Deadline; the movie franchise’s star, Sylvester Stallone will exec produce with the film’s Avi Lerner. Project comes from Lionsgate Television and CBS Television Studios.

COMING UP

Kal Penn (Battle Creek) crunches data to explore how people’s lives are influenced in unexpected ways when it comes to things like sex, food, crime and money, in Nat Geo’s The Big Picture with Kal Penn. New series launches Monday, March 30 at 9p, and internationally in 170 countries.

Smithsonian Channel investigates the story of what it dubs “the Alamo of the ancient world” in Siege of Masada. CBS mini-series The Dovekeepers, recounting events from the perspective of women at Masada, launches Tuesday, March 31 at 9p.

TV One has two premiere offerings for Easter season. Ernie Hudson (Oz) and Vanessa Bell Calloway (Shameless) star in original movie To Hell and Back, a network original movie about a man tormented by Satan bowing Saturday, April 4 at 8p, and “gospel’s biggest night,” The 30th Annual Stellar Awards, moves to new home TV One on Easter Sunday, April 5, 8p. “The premiere of these inspirational programs during Easter weekend was fueled and encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response to past faith-inspired material featured on the network,” said D’Angela Proctor, the net’s SVP of original programming and production.

What do Snoop Dogg, Shaquille O’Neal, Ludacris and Martha Stewart have in common? They’re among those who will kick Justin Bieber when he’s (sitting) down on Comedy Central’s roast of the cocky Canadian pop star. Show tapes March 14 to air Monday, March 30 at 10p. Kevin Hart is roast master.

A viral video family (“Xmas Jammies,” “All About the Baste”) gets their own reality show, The Holderness Family, launching on UP with back-to-back eps Thursday, March 26 at 10p. Produced by Figure 8 Films, series follows parents Penn and Kim as they balance the demands of their digital content business and two kids.

RETURNING SERIES

This should be fun: Animal Planet’s number one series, River Monsters, is back for season seven Sunday, April 5 at 9p, with lethal salmon, killer crocs and an underwater predator that “likes to snack on men’s genitals.” The net’s “Monster Week” in late May will include special River Monsters: Prehistoric Terror.

NBC NewsPeacock Productions announced six new episodes of Caught on Camera with Nick Cannon are on the way for NBC. Special half-hour episodes air Saturday, March 7 and April 11 at 8p; remaining hour-long shows will air later this year. Series is created in part with NCredible Entertainment.

Fox Business Network wants another chunk of Strange Inheritance. The weekly program, launched to 289,000 viewers January 26, will have a 26-ep season two.

Great American Country renewed Flippin’ RVs for season two, Junk Gypsies for a third run and Celebrity Motor Homes for a fourth go-round. “Great American Country is about the spirit of America and how Americans are enjoying life’s journey,” said Allison Page, GM, Great America Country, HGTV and DIY.

TLC’s Who Do You Think You Are? returns with new eps Sunday, March 8 at 10p. First out of the gate: Big Brother host Julie Chen travels to rural China to learn about her grandfather.

KID STUFF

Host Nick Jonas will perform on Nickelodeon’s 28th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, airing Sunday, March 28 at 8p. Also taking the stage: Iggy Azalea, Jennifer Hudson and Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer.

Nickelodeon renewed live-action comedies Bella and the Bulldogs for season two and The Thundermans for a third round. Bella, the net’s number one show, is averaging 2 million total viewers for premiere episodes; Thundermans is averaging 1.1 million K2-11.

Season five of My Little Pony trots to Discovery Family Saturday, April 4, with back-to-back premiere eps beginning at 11a. The net promises a season “full of Cutie Mark Magic.”

CASTING

Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope) will star in ABC comedy pilot Family of the Year, as an All-American mom whose life isn’t as perfect as it appears.

Olivia Colman (Broadchurch), Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) have joined the cast of AMC’s The Night Manager, set to begin filming this spring for broadcast in 2016. Mini-series is a co-production of The Ink Factory, BBC One and AMC.

Add Elisabeth Shue (CSI) and Jason Schwartzman (The Grand Budapest Hotel) to the guest cast of upcoming Starz series Blunt Talk, exec produced by Seth MacFarlane and Jonathan Ames. Comedy is slated for a summer 2015 premiere.

Adam Rothenberg landed a lead role in ABC drama pilot L.A. Crime, from ABC Studios and Mandeville.

BRANDS, AGENCIES & ADVERTISING

A+E Networks joined the “FourFronts” programmatic pilot from Freewheel, an online advertising tech company acquired by Comcast last year. “A+E is using this to set a precedent for how premium digital video inventory should be transacted and reserved through programmatic channels,” said Jason DeMarco, director of yield optimization at A+E. “By placing the focus of programmatic on the use of automation while applying data, it is now possible to ensure shared value and risk to both sides.”

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Beyond Distribution acquired Hockey Wives: Married To The Game for international launch at MIPTV. Docu-series from Bristow Global Media premieres on Canada’s W Network on March 18.

The National Cable Television Cooperative and The Weather Company struck a multi-year distribution agreement for The Weather Channel and Weatherscan linear services. The deal gives participating NCTC member companies TV Everywhere rights through subscriber authentication on multiple devices.
