Good morning. It’s Wednesday February 25, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Netflix’s next kids’ offering is a comedic adaptation of the Bottersnikes & Gumbles book series, published in the U.K. and Australia between 1969 and 1989. Currently in co-production from Cake, Cheeky Little Media and Mighty Nice, the series of 11-minute eps will bow on the streaming service as well as Seven Network Australia and CBBC in the U.K. The action follows three young Gumbles–Tink, Bounce and Willi–as they bounce about while avoiding getting tin-canned by their lazy and grumpy neighbors the Bottersnikes. Kickstart is handling animation out of Hong Kong; worldwide distribution of the series will be handled by Cake.

Nickelodeon’s Ecosystem Keeps Getting Bigger.

Nickelodeon has a powerful, 10-screen ecosystem that connects brands to our audience as well as Consumer Products, Movie Partnerships, Apps, Recreation, Social Media and Live Events.


For the first time, there will be a youth category in USA Networks’ USA Unites Awards (formerly Characters Unite Awards), which will recognize inspirational young people around the country who create positive change. USA and its distributors will award $5,000 grants to 10 winners; each will be recognized on-air, online and at hometown ceremonies. The nomination period runs Feb. 23-April 17. “The USA Unites Awards give amazing individuals–including our country’s next generation of leaders–a chance to get the recognition they deserve and a grant to increase their impact,” said Toby Graff, SVP, public affairs, for USA.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Marking the first series from Frederator’s Too Cool! Cartoons incubator to be headed to broadcast, Frederator Studios and Australia’s Studio Moshi are co-producing the short-form online hit Rocket Dog for television. Inspired by a 5-minute short created by animator Mel Roach, Rocket Dog garnered 1.5 million views since launching on Cartoon Hangover in 2013. Frederator Studios will manage TV distribution of the 52 11-minute episodes (aimed at 6-11 yr-olds) in North America; Studio Moshi will handle distribution in all other territories. Frederator Studios also formed an incubator last fall with Sony Pictures Animation called GO! Cartoons that will fund 12 five-minute animated shorts to premiere on Cartoon Hangover.

Both short-form eps and a full-length series of the new Future-Worm! are headed to Disney XD this fall. Created by Emmy-winning director Ryan Quincy (South Park, Out There), the show tracks Danny, an optimistic 12-year-old who creates a time machine lunch box, befriends a fearless, bearded worm from the future, and does-what else?!–some space travel. Voice talent includes Andy Milonakis (Kroll Show) and James Adomian (The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson).

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Season 1 of Star Wars Rebels wraps on Monday, March 2, at 9p on Disney XD. Same network, on March 5, a new four-part Ultimate Spider-Man: Web-Warriors story arc The Spider-Verse begins.  New episodes will roll out Thursday nights at 9p and culminate in a marathon, Saturday, March 28, 9-11a.

DIGITAL UPDATE

In other Netflix news, the company will exclusively premiere the third film in Paul Reubens’ Pee-Wee franchise, Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, to be produced by Judd Apatow. Production is set to begin soon. Reubens and Paul Rust (Comedy Bang! Bang!, Arrested Development) wrote the flick; John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) will direct. No release date has been announced.

Ruckus Media Group is in a new distribution agreement with Hasbro and IDW Publishing to create digital downloads of the My Little Pony licensed interactive storybook apps, full episodes and short-form video content of the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic series from Hasbro Studios, and IDW’s digital comic books in mobile markets in the U.S., Canada, and other territories. Ruckus’ My Little Pony-branded mobile storefront launches with 125 individual titles and bundles.

LICENSING

Bulldog Licensing sealed a deal with SongsWithMyName Services to develop a range of personalized music products, including CDs, DVDs and books, based on the Talking Tom brand.
