Good morning. It’s Monday February 9, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

A House of Representatives oversight committee is investigating possible improper influence by the White House on the FCC’s new broadband and net neutrality rules. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, on Friday wrote to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler requesting all documented communications between the Commission and the White House regarding the issue. Two days prior, Wheeler had made public the outlines of an FCC proposal to ban broadband providers from blocking, slowing or speeding up websites in exchange for payment.
 
 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Netflix is reportedly developing megahit videogame The Legend of Zelda into a series. News broke over the weekend that the streaming service is early in the development of a live-action series based on the story of a boy who’s called on to rescue Princess Zelda and save the fantasy world Hyrule. The Wall Street Journal reports Netflix is working closely with Nintendo, which has made about 20 Zelda games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.
 
TV and streaming show The Startup Hour wants to provide startup businesses with the opportunity to make their pitches directly to registered, approved and accredited viewers, with a new web-based application that allows average consumers to invest in companies while watching the show. Filming of pitches starts March 13 at the SXSW festival in Austin, followed by an eight-city tour; show launches in six U.S. markets and streams worldwide beginning Wednesday, May 13.
 
The ripples of the Sony Pictures hack reached the Motion Picture Association of America, which is now considering sweeping changes to its structure and policies. Among discussion said to be on the table after Sony reportedly threatened to withdraw from the association due to its lack of support after the hack is expanding membership and focus to include digital and television content. Current MPAA member companies are Paramount, Sony, Universal, Walt Disney, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox.

Star Wars scripter Gary Whitta is taking his new novel straight to the Internet. The social media maven plans to publish his horror fantasy tome via Inkshares, a company formed in 2013 that combines traditional publishing with crowdfunding. The campaign launches today, with a goal of $16,000 in preorders. Whitta just wrapped work on the script for the Star Wars film due in 2016, and also contributed to the creation of a Walking Dead videogame.
 
Behold the power of the podcast. Adnan Syed, the subject of breakaway hit Serial, will get a chance to appeal his case. The Maryland Court of Special Appeals on Friday granted the 33-year-old who was convicted of murder in 2000 the right to appeal on grounds of ineffective counsel. Syed’s appeal is scheduled to be heard in June.
