While it’s a notoriously secretive company, Snapchat isn’t immune to data leaks that shine light on its inner workings. And so it was when The Daily Beast this week published a slew of information detailing Snapchat user activity from April to late September of 2017. Here’s one snippet from the story headlined This Is The Data Snapchat Doesn’t Want You To See: When Snapchat pitches itself to publishers, it emphasizes that they will have access to its 178 million daily active users. But according to the data reviewed by The Daily Beast, only an average of 20% of Snapchat users consumed content from a Discover Edition daily. While Discover Edition unique users rose slightly over time, consumption peaked on July 24 at 38 million daily unique users, around 21% of the broader user base. The tsunami of leaked data is presented in no fewer than 37 slides on the Daily Beast website.
 
Move over, Amazon Echo. Cheddar reports that Facebook is readying a video chat device called Portal, marking the social platform’s planned entry into consumer hardware. A major point of differentiation will be Portal’s positioning as a way for families and friends to stay connected through video chatting and other social features. Cheddar cites sources as saying Portal will be equipped with a wide-angle lens that is capable of recognizing individual faces and associating them with their Facebook accounts. Facebook plans a formal product introduction in early May at its annual developer conference and hopes to ship the device in the second half of 2018. The news comes amid increasing criticism of Facebook in some quarters for its role in vetting user-generated content and its influence on global social discourse.

PROGRAMMING
 
Fox Sports is partnering with Twitter to stream a live show about the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament and with Snapchat to showcase stories about game highlights in Russia later this year. Fox Sports will produce the show that will be streamed daily from Moscow’s Red Square. Twitter users can access it using the handles @FOXSports and @FOXSoccer.
 
In a first for the Winter Olympics, NBC Olympics will stream more than 50 hours of live, virtual reality video content from the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. It will be available to users of Windows, Samsung and Google VR headsets, and for Android and iOS devices through the NBC Sports VR app.
 
Free, ad-supported network Crackle will debut its sci-fi thriller In The Cloud on Feb. 8. Ahead of the wide premiere, the full-length feature will be released on Feb. 6 exclusively through the Crackle app on PlayStation3, PlayStation4 and PlayStation Vita systems. 
 
Beginning today, the first 26 episodes of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs premieres on streaming service Boomerang, including previously unseen episodes.

CROSS-PLATFORM MEASUREMENT
 
DISH is trying to advance the measurement of cross-platform addressable advertising with a new partnership involving its Sling TV and comScore. It’s designed to enable advertisers to their campaigns’ performance on connected TV, mobile, and desktop impressions, as well as linear TV impressions. DISH says cross-platform advertising lets brands reach DISH and Sling TV viewers in a “premium, brand-safe” environment with a single buy. The ads are delivered during live and video-on-demand (VOD) content.

AT CES
 
WPP Group CEO Sir Martin Sorrell used the occasion of CES 2018 to opine on issues including agency and adtech consolidation and the continued rise of digital giants. He noted in an interview with AdExchanger that while GroupM spent $180 million on Amazon on behalf of clients in 2017, that figure could reach $300 million this year – an increase of nearly two-thirds. He sees the balance between Google, Facebook, Amazon, Alibaba and Tencent shifting, likening them to the oil companies of old, “the oil being data and AI and voice activated devices. That is going to put a lot of pressure on our clients.”
 
Comcast has a scheme for keeping people tied to its cable cords: It wants to turn its Xfinity broadband service into a home operating system of sorts integral to Internet of Things devices. In one example, a customer could use the company’s voice remote to lock doors, turn of lights, adjust thermostats and arm security systems. Comcast already offers some home-automation features via the Xfinity Home security service, which has about 1 million customers.
 
Ride-hail company Lyft shared some of its ideas about the future of transportation, including the notion that all U.S. households should have just one car. The rest should be sold to cut down on costs and traffic. It’s all part of Lyft’s promotion of car-pooling. The company cites a report that suggests that hundreds of thousands of Lyft users shed a second car in 2017 because of the availability of ride sharing.
 
 
LET’S MAKE A DEAL
 
Sinclair Broadcast Group is looking to get ahead of the curve that is ATSC 3.0 digital television technology. It’s joining with Imagine Communications to play a critical role in the development of Imagine’s next-generation business process systems for traffic, ad sales and data analytics that allow for unit- and impression-based buys. Among other things, ATSC 3.0 will provide broadcasters with a rich palette of IP-based service offerings that enhance and complement their over-the-air capabilities.
 
 
RESEARCH
 
It comes as no surprise that people are streaming more content and buying fewer CD’s. Yet the numbers reflecting the decline of the compact disc are sobering considering how popular they were less than a decade ago. Disc sales were down 14% last year, falling to $4.7 billion, just one year after registering a decline of nearly 10%, according to the Digital Entertainment Group trade organization. The drop for physical rentals was even more pronounced. Brick-and-mortar rentals and kiosk rentals declined a combined 17%, falling to just over $2 billion.

Sue Kroll is stepping down as President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution at Warner Bros. as the company reconfigures its upper management ranks. Toby Emmerich has been named Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, among other personnel changes.
 
Simulmedia promoted Kyle Hubert to Chief Technology Officer. He has been the company’s Chief Scientist since December 2016.
 
Jimmy Iovine says he’s not leaving Apple Music after all, despite numerous recent reports to the contrary. He told Variety he doesn’t have a contract that expires in August, he has a “deal.”
